Guinea to Hold Legislative and Municipal Elections in May

Guinean President Mamady Doumbouya has announced the date for the upcoming legislative and local elections, just two months after his own election, in a move seen as a new step toward restoring constitutional order in the country.

Doumbouya set Sunday, May 24, as the date for the legislative and municipal elections. These polls come after years of governance under the National Transitional Council, which has exercised legislative authority since the fall of the previous regime.

Mamady Doumbouya won the presidential election held on December 28 with 86.72% of the vote, officially assuming the presidency for a seven-year term.

His election marked the end of a transitional period that began in September 2021, when the military overthrew the then-elected president, Alpha Condé, dissolved parliament, and established the National Transitional Council.

Since then, the National Transitional Council has served as the interim legislative authority. The organization of legislative and municipal elections next May is viewed as a key step toward restoring elected institutions and consolidating the country’s return to constitutional governance after more than four years of transitional rule.
