Appointment of Madagascar’s Anti-Corruption Chief as Prime Minister

The President of Madagascar, Michael Randrianirina, has announced the appointment of the head of the national anti-corruption authority, Mamityana Rajaonarison, as Prime Minister, just days after dismissing the former prime minister and the entire government.

Randrianirina, who took office in October and pledged a series of reforms, said the new prime minister would lead the government “on the path of integrity” and restore hope. Rajaonarison has not issued any immediate comment.

In a televised address broadcast on state television, the president said:
“Your integrity is what I expect from you as prime minister. Prove that the country needs honest people—people who cannot be influenced and cannot be bought.”

No reasons were given for the dismissal of the former prime minister, Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, along with all other ministers on Monday.

Since assuming power, Randrianirina has led what he describes as a “refoundation,” following a political transition that saw the collapse of the previous government. He has framed his program as a reset aimed at restoring state authority, combating corruption, and rebuilding public trust.
