Benin and France Conduct Joint Naval Exercises to Boost Gulf of Guinea Security

The port of Cotonou last week hosted the French amphibious assault and command ship Tonnerre as part of a military mission aimed at strengthening cooperation between the armed forces of Benin and France and enhancing maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
During the week-long visit, Beninese and French naval forces carried out a series of joint activities and exercises, including coastal reconnaissance, helicopter maneuvers, and onboard firefighting drills. These exercises aimed to improve coordination and operational readiness in response to rising maritime threats in the region.
The French vessel was officially received by Admiral Fernand Ahoy, Commander of the Beninese Navy, in the presence of French Ambassador Nadège Chouat and EU Ambassador Sandra Platou.
Throughout the visit, Tonnerre opened its doors to both civilians and military personnel, allowing them to explore the ship’s technical equipment and operational capabilities.
Benin’s General Staff emphasized that the visit reflects the shared determination of Benin and France to make the Gulf of Guinea safer by strengthening joint efforts to combat piracy, terrorism, and illicit trafficking.
Tonnerre is the second-largest vessel in the French Navy after the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. It is equipped with advanced capabilities for amphibious operations, command, and medical support, making it a key asset in regional cooperation and maritime security efforts under France’s “Corymbe” operation in the area.
