Guinea adopts new constitution and sets date for presidential elections

Guinea’s Supreme Court on Saturday, September 27, announced the final results of the constitutional referendum held on the 21st of the month, confirming the adoption of the new constitution by an overwhelming majority. The move was described as a pivotal step in the country’s ongoing political transition.

The court stated that 5,951,000 voters participated in the referendum out of 6,768,000 registered, representing a turnout of 86.42%. Out of 5,746,000 valid votes, 89.38% were cast in favor of the new constitution, while 10.62% voted against it.

Key provisions of the new constitution, which the National Transitional Council submitted in June to transitional leader General Mamady Doumbouya, include setting the presidential term at seven years, renewable only once, and establishing a Senate.

The constitution also opens the door for the transitional leader to run in the upcoming elections, something previously prohibited on the eve of the military coup.

Coinciding with the announcement of results, General Doumbouya issued a decree setting December 28, 2025, as the date for the presidential elections. He instructed the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, through the General Directorate of Elections, to take all necessary measures to ensure compliance with this timeline.

He also issued another decree enacting the new electoral law, which the National Transitional Council approved on Friday, September 26.
