Earthquake Strikes Tebessa Province in Algeria

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Algeria’s northeastern Tebessa Province, near the border with Tunisia, on Sunday evening.

In a statement, the government’s Center for Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics said the epicenter was located 10 kilometers southeast of the town of Negrine in Tebessa, and the tremor extended into western Tunisia.

The center also reported a 4.7-magnitude aftershock just minutes after the initial quake.

The Civil Defense Department stated that no casualties or material damage were recorded during the initial assessment.

On Saturday, a separate 3.2-magnitude earthquake hit Laghouat Province in southern Algeria.

Northern Algeria lies within a seismically active zone. The country’s most devastating recent earthquake occurred in May 2003 in Boumerdes Province, about 50 kilometers east of the capital Algiers. That quake measured around 7.0 in magnitude, leaving more than 2,000 people dead and causing massive destruction.
